Abstract. The course of smooth ergodic theory is towards treating higher dimensional dynamical systems, in which non-conformality, contracting directions and discontinuities all pose considerable difficulties for understanding transfer operators, and the many ergodic properties that may or may not be determined by their spectrum. Subtractive algorithms are a class transformations that have intermittently captured my attention and nocturnal rest over the past few years. They consist of subtracting coordinates from one another, sometimes combined with rescaling to unit size, and despite their humble appearance, they creep into dynamical systems of the most varied nature. They, too, are non-conformal, discontinuous and worst of all, very inflexible. In this lecture, I would like to tell what they are, where they came from and question whether they will yield to the current state of ergodic theory, and if not, should we be worried?
